Steve Molans builds replica of Mister Rogers Neighborhood Trolley

Throughout my childhood, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood entertained, inspired, and taught valuable lessons to generations of viewers—including myself. One of my favorite parts of the show was the Neighborhood Trolley, the iconic vehicle that carried us from the real world into the Neighborhood of Make Believe. Like many fans, I always dreamed of having a trolley of my own. This past year, I decided it was finally time to make that dream a reality.
My journey began with a visit to Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where I traveled to the Fred Rogers Institute to see the original trolley prop used in the show. From there, I began a deep dive into research, searching the internet for any available measurements, colors, construction details, or historical information. Surprisingly, very little documentation existed. What I was able to discover was that the original trolley was built in the 1960s by a model maker and friend of Fred Rogers in Canada.
After collecting countless photos and videos of the original prop, I began the process of recreating it. I was able to locate a few helpful digital files online for basic shapes and components, but the majority of the project required careful observation, measurement, and custom fabrication.
The result is a piece-by-piece recreation built with the same spirit and attention to detail as the original. The trolley roof was 3D printed, the “Neighborhood” banners were fabricated from aluminum, the side posts, front, and rear sections were constructed from brass, and the base and seating were built from wood. With the exception of the 3D-printed roof, the trolley was recreated using the same materials and construction methods as the original—replacing traditional hand-cut fabrication with modern tools like laser cutting and digital design.
While the full driveline is still a future phase of the project, I wanted to bring the trolley to life in the meantime, so I designed and 3D printed a detailed miniature replica.
The completed trolley made its debut at Fred Rogers Day 2026 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where I had the incredible opportunity to meet Mr. McFeely himself. He was amazed by the craftsmanship and even commented that the recreation looked nearly identical to the original prop.
This project has been an incredible journey. Along the way, I learned new skills, connected with people involved in the original show and the Tom Hanks film, and met countless fellow enthusiasts who share the same appreciation for the legacy of Fred Rogers.
As a final tribute, I also recreated the HO-scale trolley featured in the opening credits of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood—bringing another small piece of this beloved world back to life.
